Next to all those monsters of Internet search a Russian competitor of Google Yandex bore a program for personal search. So “now you can perform search in the documents, letters and other data on your own computer. With the speed of Yandex” — is a commercial slogan of the official website. Although due to the software simplicity (only beta-version after all) the decision not to include it into the survey was taken.

It didn’t take the developers much to create an interface. An ideal solution for “home” search – using the browser window. The program doesn’t have that many settings: choice of disks for indexing, managing the indexing process and…that’s all. The rest is taken from the “Big Brother” Internet.  The query field and results display are practically the same. The first impression of the program is a good one — an average user with a hundred or two doc-files in My Documents folder won’t want anything else. It’s simple to Google Desktop search in that.
Nevertheless when the program was to index 100 thousand documents of different formats, it started having bugs and finally didn’t manage the task. It ‘fell’ a few times restarting the indexing from anew each time. Indexing of PDF files takes unbearably long. Subjectively, this software worked a lot slower than Google and Copernic and definitely much slower than dtSearch and SearchInform. Although, Yandex is meant for a home user, for which this speed is sufficient.

In general, the product looks raw. Hopefully by the official release date this utility will be able to compete with both Google in convenience, simplicity and stability, and other serious programs in the number of supported formats and functions.

20th of January SoftInform Company has released new version of full text search program SearchInform 1.8.02. New version has a number of useful changes, in particular has been made support of .ISO files, as well as new feature to .CSS files in native format.
